Big Blow To OKA As Powerfull Leader Joins Azimio

Must Read

Amani National Congress (ANC) party has been rocked by another major defection after Matungu MP Peter Oscar Nabulindo declared his support for Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja Movement.

Mr Nabulindo, an ally of ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, joins MPs Ayub Savula (Lugari), Oku Kaunya (Teso North) and Christopher Aseka (Khwisero), who have also switched party loyalty to Azimio la Umoja Movement.

Nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi also quit ANC for the Orange democratic Movement (ODM), amid fears that the wave of defections from ANC could dent the political stature of the party leader. Mr Nabulindo said he consulted his supporters and was shocked at how much the ground had shifted towards Azimio la Umoja.

He said his supporters in six polling stations in three wards had advised him to support Azimio la Umoja, while supporters in one polling station backed UDA.

“I have not defected from ANC but I will take the position of the people of Matungu to the ANC National Delegates Congress, set for January 23 in Nai robi,” he said. “The reason the ground has shifted is that ANC party officials have not actively cam paigned for [Mr] Mudavadi,” said Mr Nabulindo.

Mr Nabulindo’s decision has drawn criticism from close allies of Mr Mudavadi, who accused him of betraying the party.

Mr Nabulindo was elected on an ANC ticket on March 5, 2021 in a by-election occasioned by the death of Justus Murunga.

The wave of defections from ANC comes amid speculation that the party is planning to join Deputy President William Ruto.
